Book Club, Latina Authors

Our Sacramento Latina book club began as a way to keep our community members connected during the pandemic, while celebrating our culture and supporting Latinx creators. Little did we know then that book club would be such a hit and we’d be here, still reading, nearly two years and twenty books later!

Thank you to everyone who has joined #CLBookClub in 2020 and 2021, from near and far! Incorporating a book club into our Sacramento Latina-powered nonprofit has been a wonderful, insightful, and healing experience. And it has allowed us to connect with Latinas from all over the country!

Each month #CLBookClub reads a new book (titles are voted on and listed months in advance) and book club discussions are held weekly, where participants discuss the assigned reading for the week. Reading and discussing books in sections has allowed members to dissect the reading as a group and have powerful and in-depth conversations. Register for Chicas Latinas’ book club via Eventbrite.

Before we announce our first book clubs picks for 2022, let’s take a look at the list of all the books Chicas Latinas de Sacramento’s book club has read.

July BookClub Registration closes July 1st

Chicas Latinas de Sacramento’s July bookclub read is:

“The Soul of a Woman” by Isabel Allende:

“As a young woman coming of age in the late 1960s, she rode the second wave of feminism. Among a tribe of like-minded female journalists, Allende for the first time felt comfortable in her own skin, as they wrote “with a knife between our teeth” about women’s issues. She has seen what the movement has accomplished in the course of her lifetime. And over the course of three passionate marriages, she has learned how to grow as a woman while having a partner, when to step away, and the rewards of embracing one’s sexuality.

So what feeds the soul of feminists—and all women—today? To be safe, to be valued, to live in peace, to have their own resources, to be connected, to have control over our bodies and lives, and above all, to be loved. On all these fronts, there is much work yet to be done, and this book, Allende hopes, will “light the torches of our daughters and granddaughters with mine. They will have to live for us, as we lived for our mothers, and carry on with the work still left to be finished.”

July #CLBOOKCLUB Discussion Schedule:

Thurs 3/15 discuss pages 3-97 and Thurs 3/29 discuss pages 99-171

August Book Club “The Distance Between Us: A Memoir” By Reyna Grande

Join us on August 12, to discuss the first half of the book and again on August 26 to discuss the conclusion. Reading schedule TBA! Book discussions are schedule for 7-8pm. Deadline to register is August 1st!

Register for the August book club Here!!

“The Distance Between Us: A Memoir” by Reyna Grande:

“Reyna Grande vividly brings to life her tumultuous early years in this “compelling…unvarnished, resonant” (BookPage) story of a childhood spent torn between two parents and two countries. As her parents make the dangerous trek across the Mexican border to “El Otro Lado” (The Other Side) in pursuit of the American dream, Reyna and her siblings are forced into the already overburdened household of their stern grandmother. When their mother at last returns, Reyna prepares for her own journey to “El Otro Lado” to live with the man who has haunted her imagination for years, her long-absent father.”

Our very own Lorena Campos of Chicas Latinas De Sacramento was one of the five panelists participating in a discussion that explored what Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) means and looks like for our young girls and women of color. What kind of world are we envisioning which is free from sexism, body shaming, harassment, violence and oppression? How can we collectively work towards this vision? NGWCC is a non-profit organization formed to be a council for educators, administrators, business leaders, parents/guardians, students, community leaders, and community organizations to address and discuss historical and societal perspectives, conduct research, educate, mentor, and be advocates for girls and women of color. Chicas Latinas de Sacramento is excited to announce Glenwood Elementary has been chosen as our 2019 shoe drive beneficiary! Glenwood Elementary School serves approximately 500 K-6th grade students. Over 60% of the students identify as hispanic/Latino and 93% of the entire student-body are considered socioeconomically disadvantaged.

CL Glenwood 2019During our 2019 fundraiser and donation-drive, 100% of all shoe and monetary donations collected will be used to provide a NEW pair of shoes for the children at Glenwood Elementary, part of Robla Elementary School District.

Chicas Latinas’ Annual “Starting Off on the Right Foot” Shoe Drive provides NEW shoes to local elementary students in need. Shoes that fit properly, are free of holes, and have intact soles, are unfortunately considered a luxury item for some Sacramento families and children. It is our goal to see to it that EVERY child (500) at our sponsored school is able to start the new year on the right foot!

In order to provide every child at our sponsored school with a NEW pair of athletic shoes this year, we’ll need to collect enough donations from the Sacramento community to provide over 500 pairs of shoes. Donate directly via the link below or join us at one of our exciting fundraising events (such as our two recent sell-out paint nights, pics below)!

In April 2009 Chicas Latinas was founded in an effort to increase Latina volunteerism and philanthropy in the Sacramento community. Our founder believed that in order to truly reach and serve our Hispanic and Latino brothers and sisters… those serving needed to understand our culture, traditions, and barriers. We needed to step-up, serve our community members, and do our part in lifting up and helping our people.

In 2012, in the kitchen of a studio apartment and with the backing of a 20-something-year-old’s modest bank account, Chicas Latinas de Sacramento became a 501(c)3 nonprofit. Our nonprofit organization now has a volunteer roster of over 300 local Latinas, a board of directors, multiple committees, and annual programming… which continues to grow every year.

Committee Meetings Monthly

Our 10 Year Anniversary Celebration began with a call for leadership volunteers!

Our members get so busy planning, implementing, and making magic happen in Sacramento… that sometimes we forgot to share the love. This year we’re making it a point to share the Chicas Latinas leadership love and extend invites to our community members, of all ages and background, to join our committees (Programming, Marketing, Scholarship, etc.). Our 2019 call for committee volunteers has already proven successful and we’re excited about the new faces, ideas, and energy that has came into our organization!

Thank you to our newcomers ~ and our future newcomers.

Chicas Latinas’ Estrella del Mes: Junio/Star of the Month: June

20 Wednesday Jun 2018

Chicas Latinas de Sacramento has existed in the Sacramento community for nine years, thanks to the hard work and dedication of many amazing individuals. To celebrate Sacramento’s leaders, and our behind-the-scenes (s)heroes, we’re thrilled to highlight and introduce to the community our shining star for the month of Junio/June!

Chicas Latinas’ Estrella del Mes: Junio/Star of the Month: June

Sophia Agafonow

Sophia Agafonow – Former Board of Directors, treasurer

How long have you been a part of Chicas?

I was the treasurer for about three years and a founding board member, too.

Happy to announce that we’re going into 2014 with our 501(c)3 status.

What’s your favorite aspect of being a Chicas member?

I have been involved in service clubs for many years because it is extremely fulfilling, and I am happy to have the opportunity to encourage others to do the same and experience the feeling of being of service to other people in need.

What do you love about Sacramento?

It is a great community to live in and raise healthy families; it isn’t too small, or too big, which allows people to feel a sense of belonging.

What is one of your most fun, or memorable experiences volunteering with Chicas?

Introducing my good friend Susana Becerra to the group and finding out that it was a match made in heaven.

5 year Anniversary at Zocolo

Why did you join Chicas?

I understood the need to get more Latinas in our communities to think of ways of giving back. Our communities usually benefit often from the goodwill of others when going through rough patches [in life], so it is only fair for us to repay the generosity.

What has been your biggest challenge in life?

Leaving my beautiful country, Venezuela, and starting my life all over at the age of 25 in a different country, with different cultures and values. Fortunately, I met amazing people who welcomed me and made me feel at home.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be and how would you use it?

Living always in the present! Only God knows how much time I spend worrying about the future.

What is your favorite quote and why?

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give,” Winston Churchill. We need more people to give more love, time, money, energy, etc., without thinking about what’s in it for them.

Where is the best place you’ve traveled and why?

London!! There is so much history and absolute respect for their culture, whether it makes sense, or not, like its monarchy, which is pure lovely madness.

What is your most favorite family tradition?

Celebrating Russian Orthodox Easter is my absolute favorite. My grandma cooked the traditional Easter cake, and colored and hand-painted hardboiled eggs that were later blessed by the Priest during service, which is longer than usual and no one is allowed to sit, followed by an unforgettable feast at home with friends and family.

Chicas Latinas de Sacramento has existed in the Sacramento community for nine years, thanks to the hard work and dedication of many amazing individuals. To celebrate Sacramento’s leaders, and our behind-the-scenes (s)heroes, we’re thrilled to highlight and introduce to the community our shining star for the month of Abril/April!

Assistant Vice President/Senior Financial Advisor, Merrill Lynch.

How long have you been a part of Chicas Latinas de Sacramento?

I’ve been an active member for about four years now.

What’s your favorite aspect of being a Chicas member?

Opportunities for tackling regional community challenges with a team effort.

What do you love about Sacramento?

I love the size and the diversity. The area is not too big, so as an organization we can have a large impact on local projects, yet there’s so much diversity in skill and thought here, that we can take advantage to build leadership and community.

What is one of your most fun or memorable experiences volunteering with Chicas?

I’ve had a lot of fun and memorable experiences while working with Chicas, but recently we went to Bishop Gallego Maternity Home. The program is sponsored by the church and it’s for moms with new babies. I love discovering new programs that I didn’t know existed as was the case with this program. We all met there, but I arrived straight from work with my nice suit still on. The other Chicas asked if I wanted to hold a baby and I jumped at the chance; of course, the little guy promptly threw up dinner leftovers all over my nice suit. I wiped it off and soldiered on. The Chicas handed out gift baskets to new moms that evening; we gave the moms a break for a bit and a good demonstration of unconditional love, which is sometimes hard to come by these days. This kind of grass roots activity can have a positive ripple effect in our community and I believe we all went to sleep that night better off for it (the moms, the babies, the Chicas group, the Church, and the community as well).

Why did you join Chicas?

It seemed like a strong group of emerging community leaders worthy of support. So far, the Chicas have lived up to their potential and continue to amaze me with their leadership, efforts, and community enthusiasm.

What has been your biggest challenge in life?

So far, it was to complete my education. I had to fund and complete my college education on my own with little guidance.

Name one fun fact about yourself:

I once won some ribbons/awards at the California State Fair for my hand made jewelry exhibit.

What favorite quote do you live by?

“You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” – Gandhi

Where is the best place you’ve traveled and why?

Morocco because it has a lot of ancient history; it was occupied by Romans, Moors, Carthaginians, and now Islamic culture, so there’s an incredible amount of different architecture, etc. And, people were so welcoming, interesting, and passionate.
