Happy holiday’s to Chicas Latinas members, volunteers, friends and family! We miss our community dearly and are working hard to identify opportunities to give and stay engaged with the Sacramento Latino community. We’ve been in contact with many of the local organizations we regularly work with and are working to identify safe ways Chicas Latinas can volunteer and continue making a difference in our community this holiday season, and beyond — virtually or at a safe 6-foot distance. Here’s hoping in-person gatherings are in our near future. In the meantime…

Here’s how you can give in Sacramento, this holiday season:

  • Volunteer: Chicas Latinas is looking for 2-3 volunteers to help wrap gifts for WEAVE’s “Winter Wonderland” on Friday Dec. 18, from 1-4pm — for Sacramento area families. Can you help? Email us: info@chicaslatinasdesacramento.org
  • Donate to The Sacramento Children’s home via its Holiday Giving Program, adopt a child (family from the nursery) or donate gift cards.
  • Donate to Sacramento Loaves & Fishes and follow them on social media, where they often post urgent/timely needs.
  • Join our Program & Events Committee, and help us start planning for a reemerging in 2021! Meetings are evenings via zoom, all are welcomed. Email for more info: committees@chicaslatinasdesacramento.org

Here’s where you can find some holiday cheer:

Join La Familia Counseling Center, Inc. on Friday, December 11th at their Maple Neighborhood Center from 3-5pm for our Annual Posada Navideña. It will be a safe drive-thru event, following social distance guidelines. Sacramento families will be able to enjoy Christmas decorations, goodie bags, raffles and even an appearance from Santa!

  • On Dec. 20, check out The Latino Center of Art and Culture’s “LA PASTORELA DE SACRAMENTO.” Expect a modern (Zoom) version of Mexico’s traditional Christmas pageant, registration is free!

And lastly, we’d be honored if you become a Chicas Latinas donor. Chicas Latinas’ has done ZERO fundraising for its own costs this year. Whether you’re able to contribute a one-time donation or a reoccurring donation — every donation adds up and helps us reach and stay active in the Sacramento community. Can’t donate? Share our efforts with your network and/or join us as a volunteer! (Extra points if you’re the digital type.)

Happy Holiday’s from Chicas Latinas de Sacramento!

  • In loving memory of our Chicas Latinas’ member and friend, Sara Lopez.

Chicas Latinas’ Reemerging from 2020

Chicas, it has been a year. Our in-person events were canceled, including our shoe drive fundraisers, in-person volunteering became obsolete, and our meetings have became a mix of strategies to fulfill our shoe drive fundraising goals and plan for an uncertain future.

Here’s Where We’re At:

  • We have not met our 2020 “Starting Off on the Right Foot” fundraising goal. Thank you to everyone who has donated (both money and items for yard sale fundraiser, to everyone who shopped at our yard sale, and to our volunteer! We’re still a bit shy from our shoe drive goal, but the good news is that we have some time. Just as we’re trying to navigate these odd times, so are area schools. If you’re able to, please consider donating.
  • We started a virtual book club! In April we started Chicas Latinas’ virtual book club. In eight months, we’ve read 8 books — all by Latina authors. We even had an author join us once!
  • We gave away money! We awarded a local high school student with a $2,000 scholarship to use towards college, through Chicas Latinas’ annual scholarship award program.
  • All is not lost. We’ve been in contact with many of the local organizations we regularly work with and are working together to identify safe ways Chicas Latinas can volunteer and continue making a difference in our community — either virtually or at a safe 6-foot distance. Stay tuned! (If you’re interested in helping us shape what our 2021 might look like, consider joining our Programs & Event Committee)

What you can do NOW:

Join our December / January Book Club. Discussions are weekly on Thursday evenings, reading schedule will be sent to everyone who registers via zoom: https://bit.ly/CLBookClubDecJan

  • Next month, #CLBookClub will start “Clap When You Land,” by Elizabeth Acevedo, and the readings will be spread across two months.
  • Purchase your book from a Latinx retailer, here are a few in California: Tia Chuchas, Other Books LA, Booklandia. And if you want to keep it local to Sacramento, check out Underground Books.

Join our December 9th Program & Events Committee meeting, and help us start planning for a reemerging in 2021! Meetings are evenings via zoom. Email for more info: committees@chicaslatinasdesacramento.org

Check out Sacramento Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s Estrella Awards! SACHCC will be hosting “Estrellas Week” from Dec. 7 to 11.

Learn about the different ways you can give in Sacramento this holiday season!

  • You can give multiple ways to The Sacramento Children’s home via its Holiday Giving Program, adopt a child (family from the nursery) or donate gift cards.
  • Consider donating to Sacramento Loaves & Fishes and follow them on social media, where they often post urgent/timely needs.
  • Stay connected and support our local cultural organizations ~ we hear there will be some holiday posadas coming to town!

Chicas Latinas’ Estrella del Mes: Julio/Star of the Month: July!

Chicas Latinas de Sacramento has existed in the Sacramento community for nine years, thanks to the hard work and dedication of many amazing individuals. To celebrate Sacramento’s leaders, and our behind-the-scenes (s)heroes, we’re thrilled to highlight and introduce to the community our shining star for the month of Julio/July!

Chicas Latinas’ Estrella del Mes: Julio/Star of the Month: July!

Kenya Corona – Director of Member Relations at the Greater Dallas Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and prior member of Chicas Latinas de Sacramento.

How long have you been a part of Chicas?

I joined Chicas in 2014 [when I was a full-time business marketing major at California State University, Sacramento].

Why did you join Chicas?

When I first moved to Sacramento I was longing to meet a community of likeminded Latinas who shared a passion for serving, which is exactly what I found in the group. I love how open the group is to new ideas that can impact our community. I truly believe I have amigas por vida [friends for life] from the friendships I’ve developed with the chicas. I would love to see Chicas Latinas expand to other cities.

What do you love about Sacramento?

Coming from Los Angeles, I was shocked at how multiethnic Sacramento is — I truly love that! As the years have gone by, I continue to see a diverse community and I hope for this same type of representation in Sacramento’s leadership. And, of course, I love the trees!

What is the most fun/memorable experience since volunteering with Chicas?

Hands down the annual shoe-drive! I love all aspects of this event: from fundraising to the shopping, to the day of the event. Last year, two weeks from the distribution day, we had not reached our fundraising goal and came to the devastating conclusion that we would not be able to give every child at the school a new pair of shoes. However, we all came together as a group determined to do whatever we had to do. We reached out to every person we knew and were on the mission to find the best deals on shoes! Well, to everyone’s surprise, not only did we reach our goal, but we surpassed it! It’s amazing to see how these well deserving kids’ face light up from something so basic as a pair of shoes.

What are your interests and hobbies?

I absolutely love traveling, movies, and working out. I recently purchased a sewing machine, because as a petite woman, I constantly have issues finding clothes that fit perfectly, so I decided to try to make my own — wish me luck!

What motto do you live by?

One of my favorite mottos to live by is “Experiences over Things.” Many of us get so caught up living for temporary things instead of investing our time and resources into experiences that create lasting memories and stories to share.

Who is your favorite person to follow on social media? Why?

Right now, my favorite person to follow is Will Smith. He is the familiar face that many of us remember so vividly from our childhood watching the Fresh Prince of BelAir; he has super creative content, is inspirational, and I can’t get enough of his goofy, charismatic charm. If you aren’t following him, go do it now!

Where is the best place you’ve traveled and why?

Ah, this is a tough question because every place I’ve traveled to has a special place in my heart. When I travel I love to immerse myself in the culture, dine with the locals, learn the history, and of course, enjoy the scenery. Every place I’ve been is memorable. I’m currently looking forward to my trip to Colombia this week!

What’s your most favorite family tradition?

Would you consider getting a phone call from your mami every day a family tradition? Haha! Yea, let’s call it a family tradition. No matter how old I get, or how far, or close I live, I can always count on her phone call; it used to bug me when I was younger, but now, I look forward to hearing her voice.

“Starting off on the right foot!” Shoe Drive for Del Paso Heights Elementary!

Students from Woodbine Elementary excited about showing off their new kicks (2015)

Students from Woodbine Elementary excited about showing off their new kicks (2015)

This year, beginning July 1st through September 16th, we’re embarking on our third year of hosting the “Starting off on the right foot” Shoe Drive for the students of Del Paso Heights Elementary! The Shoe Drive has one very simple goal in mind: Get behind one underserved elementary school before the upcoming school year in Sacramento to give new shoes for ALL of its students within an underserved community.

Originally beginning in 2014, Chicas Latinas began planning with lofty goals to bring together the community to bring awareness to the dilemma most kids living in an underserved area are faced with: very little resources, forcing families to forgo simple items not viewed as a top priority- shoes.

This is a reality a lot of kids are living with in Sacramento, along with being located in areas of high-crime areas, especially in Del Paso Heights. Each year educators and school staff members share personal stories they or their students have experienced related to coming to school with shoes that are simply falling apart.

Fortunately, each year more members of the community are stepping in to help in whatever way they can. In 2015, Results the Training Gym invited Chicas Latinas to join them as they hosted their own shoe fundraiser/drive with their members for a Zumba class! Going on our third year means the same opportunity is presented to individuals and organizations alike who seek to show students in a neglected part of the city they care.

This year Sac City Rollers, Sacramento’s women’s roller derby team, is hosting Chicas Latinas as their Charity of the Month at their next game, Saturday July 23rd at 6:15PM! The event will be located at The Rink 2900 Bradshaw Rd, Sacramento, California 95827.

Everyone who is an adult has been inspired by someone during their childhood, unsolicited in one way or another, simply because that person decided to be a positive example. Together, we can do the same for the students of Del Paso Heights elementary.

Chicas Latinas de Sacramento will be collecting shoes & donations from July 1st to September 16th. the following locations listed below are active shoe drop off locations. Please be mindful of the times and days our dropoff locations are open for business!

Recreation.gov and Latino Outdoors Announce Partnership
During National Hispanic Heritage Month

September 15, 2015 – Recreation.gov and Latino Outdoors will celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15) by kicking off a partnership to highlight the great work by many within the Latino(a) community who dedicate themselves to connecting Latino culture, or “cultura” and community to the outdoors.

“Recreation.gov, the flagship of the Recreation One Stop program, represents the desire of all of its partner agencies to help people connect to public lands and waters throughout the country,” said Rick DeLappe, Recreation One Stop program manager. “By working with Latino Outdoors, we can bring more attention to a network of conservation-minded explorers who share their passion for the outdoors. Their stories are contagious – inspiring stewardship and exploration of our federal lands and waterways.”

“Our goal is to encourage members of our community, especially any who have experienced the Great Outdoors for the first time, to share their stories of a particularly challenging hike, seeing wildlife at a refuge, or maybe what it felt like to sleep in a tent for the first time,” said Jose Gonzalez, Founder of Latino Outdoors. “By telling our stories, the community helps define what it means to have a Latino(a) identity in relation to the outdoors. Stories have power and they say many things about the cultural traditions and values we hold—especially our love and connections with our open spaces. We are excited about this campaign with Recreation.Gov, stemming from a partnership with Active Network earlier this year, and part of a larger strategic alliance, to work together to identify and increase Latino engagement in the outdoors. Both partnerships allow us to amplify our storytelling and demonstrate the diversity of engagement in our public lands and outdoor recreation.”

Beginning September 15, Recreation.gov will feature experiences from volunteer Latino Outdoor Ambassadors from across the country. Visitors will also be encouraged to join Recreation.gov through Facebook and Instagram and share stories, photos or videos of their outdoor experiences using #LatinoOutdoors.

“Launching this partnership for National Hispanic Heritage Month provides a platform to reflect upon and inspire us to discover and enjoy the cultural influences from long ago to the present—and recognize this multi-cultural heritage as the unifying fabric of this country,” said DeLappe.

###

Recreation One-Stop is a recreation trip-planning, reservation and information sharing platform for the nation’s federal lands. Visitors to Recreation.gov can reserve campgrounds, apply for river permits, schedule a tour, discover points-of-interest near major cities, learn about destinations, and so much more. The Recreation One-Stop program is a joint initiative among federal agency partners including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service, National Archives and Records Administration, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

With roots in the past, a presence in the present and vision for the future, Latino Outdoors is a network of leaders committed to engaging Latinos/as in the outdoors, connecting familias and youth with nature, and empowering our community of storytellers to explore and share their personal experiences. Our growing online platform allows participants to creatively document their cultural connections to conservation, the environment, and the Great American Outdoors with the world.
