Hello all! It’s been a very busy month and our blogging has suffered! We have much to tell you about, including our wonderful visit at the Sacramento Crisis Nursery Center (stay tuned).

Today we’ll focus on the future!

Dia de los Muertos in Sacramento!
This weekend we are participating in La Raza Galería Posada’s 3rd Annual Panteon de Sacramento, both Saturday and Sunday in midtown. You might even see a few Chicas out there with Dia de los Muertos makeup on. We took a makeup class at Spanglish Arte last weekend!

Also on Saturday, CASA de ESPAÑOL is hosting a bilingual haunted house from 12-2:30 – located down the street from El Panteon! Perfect.

This year the Chicas Latinas de Sacramento will be showing an altar at the Dia de los Muertos 3rd Annual Panteon de Sacramento 2012 – a La Raza Galeria Posada exhibit.

“Dia de los Muertos is a very personal holiday and each family that celebrates it has their own unique traditions that they follow. It is a cathartic experience for the living as well as a time to honor and celebrate the lives of loved ones who have passed on to the afterlife. “The dead come to life in the memory of the living, who evoke their particular customs, tastes, virtues and defects (Orellana 1999:67).” Dia de los Muertos acquaints children to their ancestors as well as introduces the concept of death to children at an early age as a natural rite of passage. For adults it provides an opportunity for communal mourning. Emotions surrounding Dia de los Muertos can be somber as well as celebratory. It is a time to remember, honor and show respect to the departed. The colorful holiday serves as a reunion for the dead as well as the living.”- http://www.lrgp.org/dia-de-los-muertos.html

This year the Chicas Latinas de Sacramento will be builidng an alter for the La Raza Galeria Posada’s “Panteon de Sacramento: A Mexican Tradition Revisited” community exhibit.

Larazaflyer

Our alter will be a tribute to those who have been victims of domestic violence. In an effort to show just how prominant the problem is in our community and how it affects so many of us, both male and female. Our alter will feature the faces of those whom have been impacted by it.

We are asking members of the community, both male and female, who have been affected by domestic violence to take a stand and submit a photo of yourself for our alter. It doesn’t matter if you were in an abusive relationship yourself or if you knew/know someone who is/was, we wont ask.

Photo requirements: portrait, black & white, 5×7

And we understand that this is a difficult issue and some may have privacy concerns, so if you are uncomfortable with having your picture displayed, we are suggeting that you decorate your portrait in the traditional “calaveras” style.” (We are able to do this for you as well).

If you have any questions, or would like to submit a photo email us at: info@ChicasLatinasdeSacramento.com

Or contact Angela: http://twitter.com/AngelaRunsAmuck

Please let us know by October 14, 2011.

Thank you,
