How You Can Connect & Give With Chicas Latinas in 2021

It seems like only a few months ago when we were all filled with hope that 2021 would usher in normalcy. While we have been able to enjoy a few in-person events in the recent weeks, things are not yet normal for us and the organizations Chicas Latinas de Sacramento regularly partners and volunteers with.

We had many exciting plans for 2020 and 2021. These plans were mostly canceled or postponed — which we’ll touch on later in the post. But first, let’s talk about what we ARE doing and how YOU can join us!

Chicas Latinas Book Club:

The #CLBookClub November will be Furia by Yamile Saied Méndez.

Join us every Thursday during the month of November (excluding Thanksgiving Day) at 7pm PST to discuss Furia. Registration closes on Nov. 1! Book Club members are encouraged to shop local, whatever local means to them. Registrants from Sacramento are invited to purchase from Wild Sisters Book Co., which is giving members 10% off bookclub purchases.

*Participants are also invited to join us for our in-person book pick-up. Details available upon registration.

Chicas Latinas’ book club was started as a result of the pandemic, and has been a gift to us all! Thank you to all who have joined us, community members and authors alike. And if you haven’t had a chance to join us yet, we hope to see you at a meeting soon.

#TeamChicas is excited to join the 27th annual Run to Feed the Hungry benefiting Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services.

All team members MUST register by Nov. 11, 2021

Sacramento’s annual run is the largest Thanksgiving Day run in the country, and we can’t wait to be a part of it — again!

Holiday Drive for Sutter Cancer Patients

Chicas Latinas’ Holiday Drive this year is benefiting patients at the Sutter Cancer Center. With the help of our community members, we will provide stockings filled with self-care items for patients at the Sutter Cancer Center.

We have a goal of donating 100 “care packages” to 100 patients and are collecting NEW donated items from the list below (100 of each). View our Facebook event to share with your friends and family members!

  • Stocking or a nylon backpack to hold the items
  • Non-scratchy knit hat
  • Fuzzy socks
  • Antibacterial gel
  • Earbuds
  • Coloring books for adults
  • Coloring pencils
  • A deck of cards
  • Individually wrapped crackers & protein bars
  • Handwritten note/card of hope

UPDATE: “Starting Off on the Right Foot” Shoe Drive

Thank you to everyone who has donated to our shoe drive benefiting Woodridge Elementary. Due to COVID-19 we canceled a number of our 2020 shoe drive fundraiser events and the elementary school sponsored has been busy navigating digital-education and keeping their students and staff safe.

We’re all looking forward to a successful “Starting Off on the Right Foot” shoe drive and distribution event in 2022. Please stay tuned for future fundraiser events, which will benefit the students of Woodridge Elementary, and join us in volunteering for our distribution event in the fall, where we’ll provide each student at the school with a NEW pair of shoes for the 2022-23 school year!

Chicas Latinas de Sacramento has volunteered consistently at the Sacramento Children’s Home Crisis Nursery Program for the past few years. The Crisis Nursery does wonderful work with limited resources, providing emergency shelter services for the children of Sacramento County children, ages 0-6.

This holiday season, your tax-deductible Chicas Latinas drive-donation will help supply the Crisis Nursery with the items on their Wish List.

Chicas Latinas will use 100% of the proceeds to purchase the wish list items the Crisis Nursery needs throughout the year to care for our community’s children.

The back-to-School countdown has officially begun… and Chicas Latinas de Sacramento is working hard to provide EVERY child at our sponsored elementary school with a new pair of shoes for the 2018-19 school year. Only ONE MONTH LEFT TO DONATE to 2018 “Starting Off on the Right Foot” Shoe Drive, benefiting D.W. Babcock School!!! 

We’re halfway to our goal of collecting 600 NEW pairs of shoes!

Why we do what we do… 

“When I first learned of our 2018 sponsored school, my stomach dropped. The selected school fit our criteria and was deserving of our sponsorship and support, but there was something my board members didn’t know — D.W. Babcock was my elementary school. Chicas Latinas’ board and committee members justified their selection by sharing stats and painting the portrait of a school and children in need of community support… and I found myself transported back to a time when I was a child, in need of support, and feeling incredibly small because of it. Chicas Latinas’ 2018 “Starting Off on the Right Foot” Shoe Drive, benefiting D.W. Babcock School is underway!!! We have a goal this year to provide EVERY child at the elementary school with a new pair of shoes for the 2018-19 school year.

Chicas Latinas de Sacramento’s Annual “Starting Off on the Right Foot” Shoe Drive is just around the corner! This year our drive will benefit the students at D.W. Babcock Elementary.

The students who attend our sponsored schools live in underserved communities and lack basic back-to-school supplies. An often overlooked and basic necessity — shoes. Shoes that fit, are free of holes, have intact soles, and are not a hand-me-down are a luxury item to many of the children who attend our sponsored schools. It is our goal to see that in 2018 EVERY child at D.W. Babcock Elementary School is able to start the new year on the right foot!

In order to provide every child at our sponsored school with a NEW pair of shoes this year, we’ll need to collect enough donations from the Sacramento community to provide over 600 pairs of shoes. You can help start US off on the right foot by sponsoring this great back-to-school donation drive!

Sponsorship Information, summary:

There are 3 levels of sponsorships available — all tax deductible with 100% donations benefiting the shoe drive.   

1) Shoe-Drive Sponsor: $1,000 Gold Star Sponsorship (1 available)

Become a  Shoe Drive Star-Supporter by covering the purchase of 40 pairs of NEW shoes!

  • This level comes with a promotional event, with support from Chicas Latinas, either in-real-life or via social media, plus many other perks. Contact us to learn more!

2) Shoe-Drive Sponsor: $250 Silver Star Sponsorship (5 available)

Chicas Latinas de Sacramento tiene el gusto de organizar por segundo año consecutivo la campaña de recolección de zapatos ” Starting on the right foot” que ayuda a escuelas locales. Este año estamos patrocinando a la escuela Woodbine en el sur de Sacramento.

Nuestra meta es de recaudar 700 pares de zapatos nuevos para niños de entre 5-12 años de edad.

In case you missed last year’s shoe-drive… here’s what you missed: 

When we asked school staff members what the students are most in need of when starting the new school year, we were simply told, “shoes.” Shoes that fit and shoes in working condition… free of holes and torn soles. Back-to-school shoes, a basic need to most, are a luxury item to these children. 

For that reason, Chicas Latinas members are host anual shoe-drives for local schools and are ask the community to join us for “Starting off on the Right Foot,” in an effort to provide shoes for these students as they enter into the new school year. Shoes must be new and should fit 5-12 year old students, boys and girls.

Last year we sponsored Hagginwood Elementary School and collected over 300 shoe donations (closing in at 500 after monetary donations) for their students in need — and we need YOUR HELP in accomplishing our goal of 700 pairs in 2015.

The shoe-drive idea is simple… new school year, new shoes! Shoes that fit and are in working condition, free of holes and torn soles. Back-to-school shoes, basic for most, but often a luxury item to many families and children in socio-economically disadvantaged communities.

Let’s rally together in an effort to provide shoes for these students as they enter into the new school year.  Please consider sharing our event, donating, and helping us reach our goal. ✨A lot of area stores are offering great deals for back-to-school shopping. Fine print: Shoes should fit 5-12 year old students, boys and girls. Shoes MUST BE NEW. (Let’s give these kids something special that they’ll truly remember ~ a shiny new pair of kicks!) It’s not “technically” part of the drive, but we’ll also accept new socks. We were shocked last year by how many kids came to us without having socks on their feet.

The shoe collection dates will run from July 13 thru August 28 — ending with a free event for community members, participants, and donors! (TBA)

You’re invited to attend #Network4Cause benefiting C.A.F.F.E. (Clothing and Food for Everyone), the community volunteer organization that Chicas Latinas de Sacramento volunteers alongside, feeding and clothing Sacramento’s less fortunate.

Please join us for a wonderful evening of networking for a cause. Registration is completely FREE, food will be provided and drink purchases will benefit C.A.F.F.E. and their work with the homeless community.
