JOChristmasGifts

The end of the year has finally presented itself and calls for Chicas Latinas de Sacramento to help wrap Christmas gifts for the local organization called A Christmas Promise, on Sunday December 7th 2014 at The North Pole (1428 Howe Avenue Sacramento, CA 95825).

Each year, A Christmas Promise receives approximately 250 “Dear Santa” Letters from disadvantaged children acquired from church organizations, referral agencies, teacher and social workers in the Sacramento region.

kids

By granting the wishes of these children, A Christmas Promise- with the help of Chicas Latinas- Santa is sent to the homes of the children on Christmas Eve.

To be able to make this magic happen we will need 10 Chicas volunteers, or Santa’s helpers, to come and help wrap gifts (with a max of 16 volunteers)!

Additional help can always be used for delivery of gifts on Christmas Eve. For those interested in learning more on this or gift wrapping, please fill out the contact form below to get a head count and we’ll be sure to contact you with additional information!

This year, Chicas Latinas de Sacramento Members thought it would be a wonderful idea to supply our homeless community with Holiday Cards and postage ~ so they can reach out to friends and family members.

As temperatures begin to dip, we will be collecting donations for warm wearable clothing for men, women and children. We especially encourage men to clean out your closets as there are more men on the street than women. We’re also seeking socks and toiletries, such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, etc.

According to the Sacramento Housing & Redevelopment Agency, the homeless population in Sacramento has reached over 2,500 as of 2013 – A statistic that drives Chicas Latinas more than ever to continue giving back.

Donations will be accepted the morning of November 30th (you will see us set up with folding tables). Fill out the form to contact and/or arrange to donate prior: http://bit.ly/ChicasFeedSacHomeless

* Chicas Latinas members will also be meeting on Nov. 26th at Capsity to prepare Thanksgiving meals to be distributed by CAFFE Members on Thanksgiving day!

Chicas Latinas de Sacramento is excited to announce our shoe-drive for a Sacramento area elementary school!

Shoe Drive 2

We are sponsoring and providing shoes to the children at Hagginwood Elementary School. The school includes grades K-6 and has approximately 500 students — of which 96% receive reduced lunch prices and are considered “socio-economically disadvantaged” or at/below poverty level.

When we asked staff what the students are most in need of when starting the new school year, we were simply told, “shoes.” Shoes that fit and shoes in working condition… free of holes and torn soles. Back-to-school shoes, a basic need to most, are a luxury item to these children.

For that reason, Chicas Latinas members are hosting a shoe-drive and are asking the community to join us for “Starting off on the Right Foot,” as we rally together in an effort to provide shoes for these students as they enter into the new school year. Shoes must be new and should fit 5-12 year old students, boys and girls.

The shoe collection dates will run from August 4 thru September 18 — ending with a free #Network4Cause event for the school the evening of Sept. 18, for community members, participants, and donors!

Please share this event and consider asking your colleagues, friends, and family to donate A pair of shoes… I have 100% confidence we can collect 500 pairs of shoes, with your help! (No need to RSVP)

Drop-Off Locations 8/4- 918:

Kershaw, Cutter & Ratinoff: 401 Watt Ave. Sacramento, CA 95864

Chicas Latinas de Sacramento are joining forces with Diana Rodriguez, a Sacramento City Unified School District Board of Education Member, in an effort to clean up the neighborhood of a SCUSD school in need of the community’s attention before the new school year.

Woodbine Elementary Clean-Up

On Saturday August 16th, please join us in volunteering as we clean up the neighborhood around Woodbine Elementary School. This is an area in need of some community TLC, and we’re hoping to give it just that! No need for children to walk through neglected and often times, unsafe, streets when going to and from school.

—- >>> All we need are volunteers <<<—-

Please join us – invite your friends – family members and let’s inspire a culture of change!

**This project was inspired by Mr. Max Mendoza who never gave up advocating for his community. Thank you to Mr. Mendoza and all our volunteers for caring so much for our children’s safe passage to school each day!**

Huge thank you to everyone who helped make Chicas Latinas de Sacramento‘s Holiday Care Package for the Homeless donation drive and distribution a great success!!! We joined Sacramento community organization C.A.F.F.E. early Christmas morning and helped feed, clothe, and give Chicas’ Holiday Care Packages to the homeless – with the help of our friends, we were able to serve nearly 300 homeless this holiday season.

Chicas Latinas de Sacramento’s Monthly Volunteer Program: Sacramento Crisis Nursery Center

Introducing Chicas Latinas de Sacramento’s NEW Monthly Volunteer Program, we are now working with the California Food Literacy Center to bring the Sacramento Crisis Nursery Center healthy meals on a monthly basis.

We had our first volunteer day on October 6 and it was great!!! Thank you everyone for participating and working with us as we start this new venture. We fed 3 infants, and 8 toddlers and preschool aged children.

Chicas_nursery_visit523050_441336559245242_965194095_n

Why we chose the Sacramento Crisis Nursery…

The ultimate goal of the Sacramento Crisis Nursery program is to keep families together and reduce the number of young children that enter into the foster care system. (They care for infants and children up to 6 years of age.)

They provide…

  • Voluntary, confidential and free
  • Care provided 24 hours a day, 365 days a year
  • Children are cared for in a safe, loving and homelike environment
  • Age-appropriate play and learning activities
  • Crisis Intervention services and counseling support for the family
  • 2 locations: South Sacramento & North Sacramento

For any reason…

  • A sudden illness or accident
  • Feelings of desperation or helplessness
  • Emotional distress or frustration
  • Domestic violence
  • Homelessness
  • Drug or alcohol treatment
  • A medical or mental health situation
  • Employment or housing situation

More info: http://www.kidshome.org/what-we-do/CrisisNursery.php

It was important to las Chicas Latinas de Sacramento to provide healthy and natural meals to the children. Today a great number of Latinos suffer from health concerns that can/could be avoided with a healthy diet, for example diabetes. We wanted to make sure that we’re spreading the knowledge to the youth, regardless of culture, that nutrition and health is extremely important – and needs to start early in life. Which is why we brought the California Food Literacy Center on board!

Chicas_nursery_visit_caflc

Why we chose the California Food Literacy Center…

Mission:
To inspire change today for a healthy, sustainable tomorrow through enduring community food education.

Vision:
To promote a food literate population in California. We help Californians understand the story of their food.

They will be providing the menu for all of our nursery visits!

For October we hosted a “build your own sandwich bar” with natural and healthy ingredients. The children were able to be creative and try new foods. They were much more open to the idea of trying new foods when they were able to be hands on and creative.

October’s list of sandwich ingredients:
  • sunflower seed butter
  • wheat bread
  • whole grain bread
  • apples
  • bananas
  • other easily sliced fruits
  • raisins
  • cranberries
  • other dried fruits
  • coconut flakes

More info: http://californiafoodliteracy.org/

Our next visit will be November 17th – you can help by donating your time and/or your food! Hope to see you there!
