What you eat and drink after your workout is important.

healthy-foodWhen you exercise, you stress the body a little bit, or stress the system a little bit, and/or burn a few calories. After your workout, you need to replenish your body with quality fuel. If you have a good workout and replenish with mediocre fuel you don’t get as much of a benefit from your workout. Water is always good of course, but you also want to have some protein, some carbohydrates, and even a little fat is ok. For example, if you follow a nice workout with some water, fresh fruit, whole grain bagel or crackers with some peanut butter, this gives you a good combination of protein, fat, and carbohydrates. This way you will get the most out of your efforts.

It also makes a difference how soon after your workout you refuel. Usually, you want to take in some liquids and some quality calories within 30 minutes after finishing your workout. If it’s a hard workout or a longer workout, you want to have a larger quality meal within 2 to 3 hours of finishing your workout.

There are all kinds of expensive workout supplements and fuel sources, but most are not necessary to improve your fitness, even with advanced workouts.

Join us at our Chicas Latinas Running Group every Wednesday evening, 6:30pm at Curtis Park in Sacramento!

Latinas of Sacramento, Improve your Health by Running

There are many health and fitness benefits to running. If you Google “benefits of running” there are references for benefits with bone density, cholesterol, breast cancer, teamwork, cardiovascular health, blood pressure, weight, stress, and many others. Sometimes it pays not to focus too much on one benefit (for example weight loss) so we don’t get disappointed without immediate results.

When you are running you elevate your heart rate and you get many health and fitness benefits from that. The nice thing about running is that you can get the health benefits even if you are a beginning runner. You can start out walking, progress to walk/jog combinations, and then complete runs. If you are an intermediate/advanced runner you can capture health benefits as well. No matter where you are on the spectrum, it is possible to improve your fitness level with a regular running program.

The Chicas Latinas Running Group is a great place to start a running program or improve the running program you have now. There’s nothing like running with others in a group to keep you motivated!

Introducing Chicas Latinas de Sacramento’s NEW Monthly Volunteer Program, we are now working with the California Food Literacy Center to bring the Sacramento Crisis Nursery Center healthy meals on a monthly basis.

We had our first volunteer day on October 6 and it was great!!! Thank you everyone for participating and working with us as we start this new venture. We fed 3 infants, and 8 toddlers and preschool aged children.

Why we chose the Sacramento Crisis Nursery…

The ultimate goal of the Sacramento Crisis Nursery program is to keep families together and reduce the number of young children that enter into the foster care system. (They care for infants and children up to 6 years of age.)

They provide…

  • Voluntary, confidential and free
  • Care provided 24 hours a day, 365 days a year
  • Children are cared for in a safe, loving and homelike environment
  • Age-appropriate play and learning activities
  • Crisis Intervention services and counseling support for the family
  • 2 locations: South Sacramento & North Sacramento

For any reason…

  • A sudden illness or accident
  • Feelings of desperation or helplessness
  • Emotional distress or frustration
  • Domestic violence
  • Homelessness
  • Drug or alcohol treatment
  • A medical or mental health situation
  • Employment or housing situation

It was important to las Chicas Latinas de Sacramento to provide healthy and natural meals to the children. Today a great number of Latinos suffer from health concerns that can/could be avoided with a healthy diet, for example diabetes. We wanted to make sure that we’re spreading the knowledge to the youth, regardless of culture, that nutrition and health is extremely important – and needs to start early in life. Which is why we brought the California Food Literacy Center on board!

Why we chose the California Food Literacy Center…

Mission:
To inspire change today for a healthy, sustainable tomorrow through enduring community food education.

Vision:
To promote a food literate population in California. We help Californians understand the story of their food.

They will be providing the menu for all of our nursery visits!

For October we hosted a “build your own sandwich bar” with natural and healthy ingredients. The children were able to be creative and try new foods. They were much more open to the idea of trying new foods when they were able to be hands on and creative.

October’s list of sandwich ingredients:
  • sunflower seed butter
  • wheat bread
  • whole grain bread
  • apples
  • bananas
  • other easily sliced fruits
  • raisins
  • cranberries
  • other dried fruits
  • coconut flakes

Our next visit will be November 17th – you can help by donating your time and/or your food! Hope to see you there!
